Camp Overview

Required For: Instructors, Interns, Researchers, Minions

Delivery: In person

Review of roles and hierarchy of camp, camp procedures, a tour of locations, tips and tricks, and work contracts.

Program Philosophy and Motivational Theories

Required For: Instructors, Interns & Researchers

Delivery: Online videos, web text, readings*, and test

This training provides an overview of the research and theories that inform the SPICE program model and how these theories have been translated into concrete guidelines for doing science with children in a manner that supports motivational development. Additional reading and writing assignments may be required for researchers and interns.

Volunteer Policies & Safety Training

Required For: Volunteers

Delivery: Online video and test

Quick overview of SPICE practices and underlying theories for volunteers.
Overview of safety for carrying out science activities with children including: fire & combustibles, chemicals, cryogenic substances, and general safety.

Safety (Main)

Required For: Instructors, Interns & Minions (Optional for Researchers)

Delivery: In person, three hours

Everything you need to know about safely carrying out science activities with children including: fire & combustibles, chemicals, cryogenic substances, and general safety. Training includes a series of hands-on activities.

Junior Minion Refresher Training 

Required For: Junior Minions

Delivery: Online

Minion training will take place mostly in person, however, the video linked here provides information about training for returning minions who cannot make in person training.

Youth Protection Policy and Training

Required For: Instructors, Interns, Researchers, and Volunteers

Delivery: Through the UO training site

This training includes information about conduct with minors, recognizing signs of abuse or neglect, and reporting requirements. All personnel must read the Youth Protection Policy and complete the online training. Employees (and students) can access the training directly. Volunteers will be sent a link to access the training.

Roles

Lead Instructor - Each camp has two lead instructors. These are paid positions that work closely with the program director and supply coordinator. Lead instructors are responsible for setting the final schedule, testing and developing activities, providing updated supply lists to the supply coordinator, leading camp activities, and directing volunteers and junior minions. Instructors will be provided a contract with duties and responsibilities that they must read and sign.

Volunteers - Volunteers carry out a variety of duties at SPICE,  including but not limited to: assisting with activity testing and development, set up/clean up, assistant teaching during camp activities, running errands, supervising/chaperoning campers during breaks and transitions, and leading games. Some volunteers may lead activities under the supervision of the lead instructors. Volunteers must sign a UO volunteer form.

Instructional Interns - Interns are graduate and undergraduate students earning practicum or other credits toward degree work. Instructional interns work closely with the camp director and lead instructors. Instructional interns participate in activity development and testing, assist with instruction and lead some camp activities. Additional reading and writing assignments may be included in the internship.

Research Assistants - Research assistants can be paid, volunteer, or for research credit positions. Research assistants aid the camp director in data collection. This includes administering surveys to campers, confirming the receipt of consent and assent forms, answering parent questions about the research, carrying out camp observations, completing fidelity rubrics, facilitating focus groups, writing up research notes and memos, and data entry. Research assistants may stay with the program after the summer to participate in data analysis. No paid analysis positions are available at this time.

Junior Minions - Junior minions are SPICE camp alumni who return to volunteer with the program. Junior minion duties can include: assisting with preparing supplies, setting up/cleaning up activities, supervising/chaperoning campers during breaks and transitions, running errands, and helping answer camper questions during activities. Minions will be provided a contract with duties and responsibilities that they must read and sign.
